2008: My Year in Review

2008 is winding down. Finally. It’s been quite the whirlwind of a year for me to say the least. I returned from my year in Thailand to the cold winter of Wisconsin. I had to re-acclimate myself to life in the Western world. After a few short weeks at the parent’s casa, I jettisoned off to sunny California with no job, no money, no car, and no prospects. And that was just the beginning.

Upon reaching California I had to map out a game plan for my immediate future. What kind of job was I going to get? This was the beginning of my career! A huge decision that I had put off a year by fleeing to Thailand. But, again, this decision stared me face to face. After many applications, interviews and rejections in a plethora of different fields I finally landed a job…bagging groceries at Trader Joes. Hahahahaha. Hardly what I expected. But I didn’t quit searching. I worked that job while I continued to look for my grown up job. I had the 2 minute interview at a Hollywood talent agency, the infamous door to door sales interview, some other interviews that I’d rather forget. Finally, I landed a non-paid internship at a one woman online marketing and promotions company. A desperate man and a far too busy entreprenur, a perfect match. Before I even started that internship, I was offered a part time online marketing gig. That sparked a roughly eight month fury of work. Trader Joes, Quarterlife, and Sideways Media, all in a seven day week. Something had to give, 7 days a week in three different cities is killer.

2008 also marked another first in my life. My first firing. Quarterlife.com ran out of funding and had to let me go. Shit. What a weird feeling. I had no time for tears, I sent out my resume again and got a bite by a video How-to website, VideoJug.com. The day after my last day at Quarterlife, I started a temporary job at VideoJug. I built my resume up at VJ for a few months while continuing the insane schedule of double shifts, VJ-TJ, VJ-Sideways, leaving at 9am and coming home at 11:30pm. Wheew! I can’t believe I did that. Seven days a week again. I was forgetting how to have fun.

When my VideoJug gig expired I was left unemployed (I didn’t really consider Trader Joes as a job, even though that’s all it was. Does that make sense?) Unemployed in one of the worst economic times of America. Fuck. Another job search. Despite the gloomy outlook, I felt very optimistic about the future. The unemployment gave me the first days off I had since May (this was at the end of September mind you). I circulated my resume once again, I blasted that CV to any job opening I heard of. After two weeks of looking, I hooked up with a small online marketing company. 60 day intern to hire. I took it. And you know what? This company turned out to be the greatest company I’ve ever worked for. I love my line of work, the employees, even my bosses. The other week, when I was hired as a full time employee, it made all that hard work and all those obsticles I endured throughout 2008 worth it (and I was finally able to quit Trader Joes…yay!).

I’ve grown up a lot this year, learned more than I could have imagined. I went from looking at jobs all over the professional map to a more refined search in online marketing. From there I’ve narrowed it down even further to viral marketing. I have a career? So adult. Now I look forward to 2009 where I can concentrate not on surviving, but thriving. Big things for 2009! I hope all you BoumanBloggers stayed tuned to this blog next year. It’s been a pleasure writing for you and I will continue to write next year. Stay tuned.

My Pilates strategy is backfiring

For those of you who don’t know, I take pilates once a week. I love it and I am not ashamed one bit for participating in it. It’s a great workout, mixes things up from the grind of running and lifting. It’s also nice to see flexible girls in tight pants in front of you. I also thought this might be a good way to meet some ladies. Occasionally you partner up for exercises that require you to intertwine your feet or sit back to back or some other close proximity exercise. What a great way to get to know a girl better! Well that plan backfired when an old man joined my class. Yes, this dude is now my default partner. So instead of brushing up on a sweet, young lady, cracking jokes and showing off my affable personality… I get the sweaty old man. Yay. If this is karma, I want to know what I did wrong.

Twittering away my privacy

So I had this rad vlog planned out to do today, but like ALWAYS, my roommate is sitting outside my door watching TV. Seriously, I know, I should be able to tape with someone on the other side of the wall if I am going to post this for (potentially) millions to see (realistically dozens). However, I just lose a little something with the knowledge that he’s right there, hearing me cackle away at myself. I could go on about this guy, but I won’t bore you with my roommate tantrum and get to the “good” stuff….Twitter’s ruthless rule over my life. This is probably the 1,329,438th “Twitter Runs My Life” blog article on the blogosphere, but I’m putting in my two cents. First of all, for everyone out there deficient in the newest social media, Twitter is:

150px-twitter

Twitter is a free social networking and micro blogging service, that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. [Wikipedia] Basically Twitter is an away message that informs everyone what you’re doing at any given time (if you choose to inform everyone). This can be something useful like “New Blog Post at:___” or something mundane like “Watching Gilmore Girls”. Either way, you’re updating people about your life. At first, I signed up for Twitter to see what the fuss was about. Quite frankly, I wasn’t that impressed. But in an effort to be more in tuned to all the social networks, I acquiesced to my initial hesitation and started to “Tweet” more regularly. I began to begrudgingly post tweets to get more involved and acquire Twitter “friends”, but I soon found myself Twittering like crazy. During my normal day, I’d think to myself, “Hmm, maybe I should Twitter this.” Some of my recent tweets are, “Installed Gmail chat!” or “New Gmail theme…awesome!”. Goodness, I am a dork! Twitter is seeping it’s way into every facet of my life. I find that I have to resist making tweets because who really cares that I just switched toothbrushes and love my new bristles? Twitter is a fascinating site that I’ve found to be quite useful as well as consuming. It’s a great news source. I “follow”news sources like CNN and the NY Times, which give me up to date news stories. There are certain blogs I follow via Twitter so I know when they’ve posted something new (I guess I could subscribe to their RSS). I also follow friends to keep informed about their daily lives. Basically I can feel like I’m connected to a person without ever speaking to them and in some cases, knowing them. This is why I am approaching Twitter obsession. I like to be “in the know”. Twitter allows me to do this very easily. I am also very self absorbed and actually think people care what I am doing at all times. Twitter is my enabler. Did you know I can post tweets from the web on Twitter.com or on my desktop from Twirl, or on my phone via Twitterrific? That’s too many places! That’s not all of the options either. I can’t get away! I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter. I am willing to give up some of my privacy to peer into the lives of others. It may not be the healthiest thing for me, but it could be worse, I could be smoker. If’ you’d like to know a little more about me and my Twitter obsession, follow me on Twitter at:
