There’s something about a guy appearing in his robe, with fists clenched–and looking ever-so-absolutely self-possessed–that take me back to seeing the hero of my youth–Muhammad Ali. (My other hero was Dorothy Day). They were BOTH poets and pacifists.
Ali said it best, as he refused to be drafted into the US Army, asserting that he was opposed to war in any form, but adding: ” You’re asking why I won’t go Viet Nam? My answer: ‘No Viet Cong ever called me nigger’. That’s why.” His case went to to the Supreme Court and the court backed Ali, not the Draft Board. So, he went back to being “the greatest”.
Keep those fists up. But, just call it a dance move. Don’t take up prize-fighting OR WAR.
